Michigan’s Cool Cities Neighborhoods

Cadillac

Cobbs & Mitchell Building Redevelopment Project

Project Description:

  • In partnership with the state of Michigan and local stakeholders, the city of Cadillac plans to acquire the historic Cobbs & Mitchell building to facilitate its reuse by the private sector.
  • Creative reuses for the facility are under study, with office and/or residential options topping the feasibility list.

Highlights:

  • Formerly occupied by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the historic Cobbs & Mitchell building is located in the heart of Cadillac’s downtown, within walking distance of many area businesses, city buildings, a walking trail and Lake Cadillac.
  • This beautiful neo-classical building showcases nine varieties of Michigan hardwoods used in its construction and is listed on Michigan’s Register of Historic Sites.
  • When the city of Cadillac learned that MDOT planned to vacate the building, it wanted to assist the owner –  the state –  in finding a developer who would not only bring business to the area, but who would also preserve the historic nature of the building.  The city is still in the process of finding this developer and is using its Cool Cities designation to help attract one.
  • The preservation of the historic Cobbs & Mitchell Building will add to the current redevelopment of the downtown area, and the city is working hard to ensure that the building will not be demolished.
