Michigan’s Cool Cities Neighborhoods

Detroit

Focus: HOPE - The Cool Corner

The Catalyst Project will provide new housing, new retail, and a new outdoor interactive environment, as well as serving as the springboard for future redevelopment of this portion of Detroit and Highland Park.

Highlights:

  • The Cool Corner at Focus: HOPE has redeveloped and revitalized the corner of Oakman Boulevard and Woodrow Wilson. On the south side of the Corner, a 55-unit senior apartment community, The Village of Oakman Manor, was constructed. The Village of Oakman Manor provides safe living arrangements for seniors, as well as employment and volunteer opportunities.
  • To the north, the Bell Building and a Yellow Pages Building are awaiting redevelopment from local business initiatives.
  • Adjacent to the Bell Building is a new green-space park. The park is large and beautiful addition to the community.
  • In response to the community interviews and through the activity fund grant of $4,500 in July 2009, Focus: HOPE has planned three grand-opening entertainment events at the park.
  • The great music and free refreshments attracted over 60 residents in the community to attend the first summer concert on July 24, 2009. Focus: HOPE expects similar success for the upcoming movie and concert nights.
  • Also, with the activity funds they will be erecting a permanent park identification sign with the name “HOPE Community Park, A Cool Cities Creation.” Although the catalyst project has jump-started the area, it is important to follow through with cultural events that include the community in the revitalization process.
