Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation - Revitalization

The Grandmont Rosedale Commercial Revitalization catalyst will enhance the streetscape environment of the Grand River commercial district, which will spur new business development and job creation along the corridor. The catalyst grant was used to repair and landscape historic neighborhood entrances and make improvements to the site of the Farmers' Market.

Highlights:

• The project has been completed and all three components are sustainable.
• The Northwest Detroit Farmers’ Market is an economic development project that has been greatly strengthened due to the catalyst grant. Local vendors have had an opportunity to expand their businesses and reach a broader market as a result of the improvements to the Farmers’ Market made possible by the catalyst grant.
• The Farmers’ Market draws together local residents and customers from outside of the community on a weekly basis, encouraging local cultural attractions due to the increased traffic. The Farmers’ Market has become a social place for all neighbors, bringing people together, which is developing a sense of community throughout the neighborhood.
• Additional support was received from the Michigan Department of Transportation for streetscape improvements as a result of the Cool Cities catalyst grant. Funding from the City of Detroit was also received to support the Farmers’ Market. In addition, Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation (GRDC) received countless volunteer hours from local residents working on the streetscape projects and at the Farmers’ Market, and the mural artist accepted a charitably modest stipend in exchange for his work.
• The mural outside of the GRDC headquarters is a local attraction. Its boldness and distinctiveness has positioned it as one of the primary identifying features of the Grandmont-Rosedale communities. Individuals from outside this community frequently comment on it, usually saying “Oh, you’re that neighborhood with the big mural.”
