Lighthouse Communities, Inc. - The Hubb - Shape the Square

The catalyst project converted an industrial building into the Hubb, a 60,000-square-foot commercial center offering space to Internet-dependent companies. It also targeted facade and streetscape improvements nearby to enhance the impact of the Hubb and establish a high-tech niche within the urban neighborhood context. These improvements will increase walkability and expand the impact of the 160 new full-time jobs created by the new Internet-based venture Pathways Internet Services.

Highlights:

• The project has been completed and the streetscape facade improvement has gone well, with the painting of murals by teens.
• The murals are public art. A community garden has also been created for recreation purposes.
• The Urban Institute Contemporary Arts, SE Community Association, Restores and Madison Square churches, and the Business Administration, as well as the Neighborhood Association of Lighthouse, have all been involved with the project.
• An Internet service provider moved its headquarters to this area. There has been retention as well as attraction due to the headquarters of the Internet company being here.
