City Opera House Technologies Project

Equipping the newly restored historic opera house with new technology for lighting, audio, and communications makes it economically feasible to reintroduce a dynamic cultural attraction with frequent and diverse programming and provides the ability to increase audience capacity by 50 percent. The project will also extend the nightlife of Traverse City into the evening with retail. The grant is to be used for wiring, a sound system, high-tech electrical, and specialty lighting.

Highlights:

• The City Opera House of Traverse City is the oldest intact Victorian opera house in the state of Michigan, and is one of the only buildings of its kind to offer the unique performance space of a raised stage alongside an open audience area.
• The Cool Cities catalyst grant provided the funds for this historic landmark to upgrade its technical capabilities and facilities, which in turn has opened up endless opportunities to host events, fundraisers, and cultural performances that cross local, national, and international boundaries. 
• The technological renovation of the City Opera House has not only made it possible to employ local artists, but also has provided economic opportunities to local show producers and philanthropists seeking to bring innovative cultural events to the  community. The Opera House has also been utilized by local schools and youth programs for performance space. 
• The increased economic development of the downtown area, which can be partially attributed to the events that the Opera House space has drawn, is evident from the myriad  entertainment, retail, and restaurant opportunities that are available for local residents and tourists. 
• The City Opera House has also been an integral part of the success of the Traverse City Film Festival, now in its fifth year. This very popular event attracts a lot of business in the summer.
